Jin’s path to patisserie and cooking is anything but conventional. A Malaysian-born Chinese living in the UK, he was working as an engineer when winning the Cambridge Bake Off in 2015 sparked a brand-new direction. That turning point launched a five-year double life: coder by day, baker by night.

Having established The Baking Jin in Cambridge in 2016, Jin brought his boutique micro-bakery to the Suffolk countryside in 2023. Unlike conventional bakeries, Jin's bakery focuses exclusively on signature cloud-soft chiffon sponges with East Asian-inspired flavours. Rooted in the traditional Chinese philosophy of "letting a hundred flowers bloom" (百花齐放), Jin’s goal is to offer the UK cake scene another fantastic genre to enjoy. Chiffon cakes were a cherished part of his childhood, so bringing this light, delicate staple to Suffolk felt like the perfect way to share a piece of his heritage.

Beyond celebration cakes, Jin connects with cake lovers through countryside pop-up coffee counters and Malaysian supper clubs, offering locals a genuine taste of his heritage through food and drink. Deeply grateful for the warm welcome his bakes and supper clubs have received, Jin sees this stage of his culinary journey as just the beginning.
